YK ARCC - Artist in Residency - ‘This City 2’ - Philippe LeBlond


The Yellowknife Artist Run Community Centre is pleased to present our second ‘This City’ artist residency featuring Yukon based artist Philippe LeBlond. With over 15 years of experience working within the kinetic art world, LeBlond will collaborate with the artistic community of Yellowknife in the design and creation of a fully functional and moving zoetrope sculpture which will be permanently installed at Somba K'e Civic Plaza/City Hall. The residency aims to engage and collaborate with community and to speak about the importance of the creation of public art in downtown Yellowknife.


Residency and events as follows :


‘This City 2’ artist residency runs from Friday, August 22nd through to Friday, September 5th


Friday, August 22 - Kick-Off Night & Artist Talk & mini-show - Artist and artwork will be present, from 7 to 9pm. The artist will discuss his work and Public Art. Event to be held at the Northern Frontier Visitor Centre.

Saturday, August 23 & 24 - Weekend Workshop : Be a part of the Art! - Would you like to add your artistic and creative voice to a permanent sculpture which will be installed at Somba K’e Civic Plaza? Be part of the design process, learn about kinetic art, partake in a dump run, contribute through your own medium, and much much more. *free

Monday, August 25 to Friday, August 29 - Artist building on site at Somba K’e Civic Plaza

Wednesday, August 27 - Artist Lecture : Mechanics and Movement of Kinetic Art- learn about drivetrains, power, mechanical movements and reduction systems form a theoretical and artistic standpoint. 7 pm. At Yk Arcc.

Thursday, August 28 - Artist Lecture : The Use of Movement in Art- A look at how motion can conceptually contribute to art! Reflect on how motion can convey meaning and message within your own practise. 7 pm. At Yk Arcc.

Saturday, August 30 - Workshop: Soldering For All - Want to learn the basics of soldering? Get initiated through constructing your very own eyelash mirror *small fee to cover supplies

Monday, September 1 to Friday, September 4 - Artist building on site at Somba K’e Civic Plaza.

Thursday, September 4 - ‘This City 2’ Sculpture Reveal Event - from 5pm-7pm at Somba K’e Civic Plaza.


Call for participants :


‘The City 2’ is ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY, collaboration and creation! Would you like to add your artistic and creative voice to a permanent sculpture which will be installed at Somba K’e Civic Plaza? If you feel that some or all of these skills apply to you, please contact us.


  • Artists and creatives of all mediums! People who work or have a desire to work with glass, metal, clay, textiles, etc. can all collaborate.  

  • A desire to learn about public art and to collaborate and design a unique zoetrope sculpture which will be permanently installed at the Somba K’e Civic Plaza at City Hall in Yellowknife, NT

  • An interest in learning more about kinetic art, physics and mechanical processes and movement

  • Dump experts and salvagers, or as Yellowknifer's like to call it ‘Tiffany’s’ experts!

  • Light to heavy lifting and technical assistance needed to help Philippe for an hour or two each day at the Somba K’e build site from Monday to Friday for the two weeks. If you want to sit in the park while Philippe takes a lunch that would be most helpful

  • Participants must commit to attending the Opening Night on Friday, August 22 where some initial information regarding the two week residency will be outlined and design elements discussed

  • People who have experience with soldering or welding

  • People who just generally would like to help the YK ARCC and fill their volunteer hours.
